About Mr Tim Spalding

Tim Spalding is a highly experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and specialist knee surgeon, renowned for his contributions to advancing knee surgery.

After qualifying from Charing Cross Hospital Medical School in London in 1982, he began his medical career with the Royal Marines and Royal Navy, treating service personnel and gaining extensive experience in managing sports injuries. He served as a Consultant for five years in the armed forces, including active service abroad, before transitioning to civilian practice.

Tim honed his skills with advanced training in Oxford and Royal Hospital Haslar, followed by a prestigious fellowship in arthroscopy and knee surgery in Toronto, Canada, from 1994 to 1995. In 2000, he joined University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, where he worked for over two decades, establishing himself as a leading figure in knee surgery.

He holds the title of Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Cleveland Clinic London, working there two days a week, and focusses the other half of his practice at Nuffield Health Warwickshire Hospital.

Throughout his career, Tim has specialised exclusively in knee surgery, focusing on sports-related injuries and degenerative knee conditions. His expertise spans a wide range of procedures, including arthroscopic anterior and posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, meniscal surgery and reconstruction, articular cartilage repair, autologous chondrocyte transplantation, osteochondral allograft joint surface reconstruction, osteotomy, and knee joint replacement. He has pioneered meniscal transplantation, performing over 400 of these procedures—the highest number in the UK—and co-founded the International Meniscus Reconstruction Forum (IMReF) to drive innovation in this area.

Tim’s influence extends beyond surgery. He is the past president of the international ACL Study Group, dedicated to improving the management of ACL injuries. With a thriving sports knee surgery practice, he ran the knee fellowship programme in Coventry he still remains deeply engaged in research and teaching, lecturing nationally and internationally on various aspects of knee surgery. His pioneering work in meniscal allograft transplantation and other advanced techniques has earned him widespread recognition.

In addition to his medical achievements, Tim has been an advisor in the world of competitive sailing, serving as the medical advisor for the Volvo Ocean Race until 2012, and also sat on the Medical and survival Committee for the RNLI.

After dedicating over three decades to the NHS, Tim transitioned in 2021 to focus on private practice and advancing research initiatives, continuing his legacy of innovation and excellence in knee surgery.
